Failure IS an Option

A couple of weeks ago, I worked with a team on their individual and collective BIG, SCARY, HAIRY GOALS. After the first session, the leader pulled his team together and said:

Here’s the deal: you get to determine where you set your goal. It’s important to know that no matter where you set it, there is a good chance that you may not hit the mark. And, that’s okay!

But, think about this: if you set it here…

…and you miss the mark, you end up here:

And, that’s great!

You’ve made progress.

You’ve improved who you are.

We all win!

But, the way I’ve always thought about it is this: why not set goals that are really high—goals that are way up here…

…because in doing so—with failure being a very real option—look at what missing the mark looks like now:

Failure IS an option.

So what!

Think about what’s possible along the way by setting a really BIG…

…a really SCARY…

…a really HAIRY GOAL!
