Invest in the Absurd

About 2 months ago, my swim coach came back from Australia proudly sporting a new pair of Budgy Smugglers. I had never heard of the swim suit company before and couldn’t stop laughing when one of my teammates, Nick, sent a message to the group:

Dave Cameron, I think this was a missed opportunity.

The rascal in me messaged Nick, we both ordered the suits, and we coordinated a day for the big reveal of our wedgie swim suits.

The team loved it and I even had a teammate say, “Reed, your kids aren’t old enough yet, are they, where you will be the dad embarrassing them?!”

Not yet…but, I’m sure it’s coming.

I tend to have an addictive nature.

As such, one suit wasn’t good enough for me. I have since ordered 5 additional Budgy Smuggler suits.

“Oh my gosh, Reed, how much have you spent on swim suits.”

At about $45 a suit, we’ll simply call it an investment in the absurd.

And whatever your thing is, I urge you to do the exact same: invest in the absurd.

Spend a little bit of money on some fun—some play.

Because goals can get hard.

The process can get monotonous.

Things along the way can get pretty heavy.

And lots of doubts are going to creep in.

I can’t promise the outcome, but I can share this with you:

By investing in something as silly as crazy-printed swim suits, swimming has become an absolute joy.

There is a lightness to everything.

There is a little smirk every morning I select a suit.

The seriousness of the work I put in holds a lot less weight.

And, ironically, by simply playing in the water, some amazing things are happening.

My ability to push myself feels much easier—and lasts longer.

My mindset going into a hard set: “oh, this is going to be fun.”

My interactions with my teammates are more joyous.

And, as any swimmer—or goal-chaser—wants, the touch of what I’m chasing is getting closer and closer and closer.

If it’s all feeling a bit heavy, do something silly.

Play a bit.

Invest in the absurd.

Invest in you.
