When You Wake Up in the Morning, It’s A Quarter to Five…
I get overwhelmed when I buy a new toothbrush—the wall of options paralyzes me.
Geez, should I get the hard or soft bristle one?
Oh, wait, there’s a medium one!?
That one has different colored bristles—maybe that’s better!?
Gosh, there’s one that not only has different colored bristles, but also has little rubber ones, too!?
Extra soft! Pfft…I hadn’t even considered that.
It’s not uncommon for me to stand in the grocery store aisle—palms getting sweatier and heart rate increasing with each new option—for 10 minutes considering my choice.
Unbeknownst as to how in the world I’m able to do this considering the state I’ve worked myself into, I muster up the courage to pick one and move on.
And, at least for me, here’s the irony of my fretting:
I may give my precious toothbrush choice a quick analysis when I use it for the first time that night, but—quickly—it simply becomes any ole toothbrush in the line of my toothbrush history.
And, no matter what I pick, it really doesn’t seem to matter all that much—at least that’s what the dentist tells me every 6 months.
It’s the same with goals.
We paralyze ourselves with picking the perfect one.
And, as a result, this leads to an accumulation of days—and weeks and months and years—where we take no action.
Or, because there are so many options that we can choose from, we jump from goal to goal to goal.
The result:
Cavities in our life story.
Big ole root canals.
When it comes to our goals, maybe we can learn something from the toothbrush aisle: just pick one and build a habit around it.
In doing so, you’re likely to get a good report from your dentist.
…you brush your teeth…ch ch ch ch, ch ch ch ch!
